Dear Parents,
There are fundamental differences to consider when you compare a Montessori Elementary/Middle School experience to a more traditional one. Although the curriculum is essentially the same, the method for teaching is different and within our teaching environment, the students have access to curriculum well beyond their current grade level. We believe these differences provide an unmatched learning opportunity for our students.
At Riverbend, our classrooms are vibrant and engaging, yet surprisingly quiet and peaceful. Students are free to walk about and talk to one another, but remain studious and responsible for their work. They receive most of their lessons individually or in small groups, which is an optimal way to learn. Our teachers are trained to be keen observers and, with only a few students at each lesson, it is clear when a student lacks understanding and may need additional instruction. Our teachers also know each student’s individual learning style, enabling them to support their students even better.
Throughout our programs at Riverbend, we emphasize social and emotional development along with our students’ academic progress. Our older students volunteer in community service, learn practical life skills, and mentor younger students throughout the school. These activities provide opportunities for our students to build strong character and respect for others.
We look forward to giving you a tour of our programs at Riverbend, so you can see firsthand what Montessori learning looks like at the Elementary and Middle School levels.
Sincerely,
Melanie Wilson
Education Director
